MEMBER INTERVIEW #5: SAMUEL D. HUNTER

Occupation: Playwright.  To pay the bills, I teach classes Fordham and Rutgers.

How long have you been a member of Partial Comfort?

I'm a brand new member--I was invited to participate in the retreat last summer and I was just made a member last Fall.

How did you initially find out about Partial Comfort? What made you decide you wanted to be a member?

I had always known about Partial Comfort- when I was in school, I knew them as the "cool" theater company, one of very few member theater companies in New York and certainly the youngest and edgiest.  Thomas Bradshaw initially put me in touch with the company while we were both working on scripts together in the Lark's Playwright's Workshop, and to my surprise, they invited me up to the retreat.  I was hoping they would make me a member and was so happy when they called me a few months ago.  Very few companies out there today are willing to take the kind of risks that Partial Comfort is willing to take.  They consistently produce relevant, challenging theater year after year, and I'm overjoyed to be a part of the company.

What are some projects (readings, workshops, plays) that you've enjoyed
working on within the company?

At the retreat last summer, they did a reading of my play GOD OF MEAT, and very recently they did that play in their "Welcome Mat" reading series, directed by company member Erica Gould and featuring company members Sarah Nina Hayon, Andrew Garmon, and Vince Madero.  All around a really fantastic experience; getting to work with company members throughout a longer rehearsal process was a real treat and made me even more glad that I'm a part of the company now.

What projects (with the company or outside of the company) have you recently worked on or do you have lined up?

A little later this Spring, my play GOD OF MEAT is going to be produced in New York.  In the fall, my play ATLASING SODOM is being produced at a few regional theaters, and later that year my play I AM MONTANA is going to have an off-broadway premiere.  I'm also working on a new play tentatively titled THE HEAVY SERMON, and I'm also working with a theater company in Mexico City on a play of mine called FIVE GENOCIDES which has been translated into Spanish.
